You can dislike AI without it being for moral reasons
I didn't really want to post much about AI because as Don Draper says,
"it's like politics, religion, or sex - why talk about it?"
The point being that everyone has their opinion on it, and no talking will change that. But unfortunately, just like politics, religion and sex it seems it's all anyone talks about.
More and more often, when I hear someone talking about why they dislike AI, they mention that it's for moral reasons. The stolen content for training, the massive energy use, the environmental impact, the water use.
I'm sorry, but I probably don't believe you. They are all very good reasons to dislike something, and that's the point. By making it a moral stand, it's a way to signal that there is only one correct opinion (and coincidentally, it's the one you hold).
This way of presenting arguments is very disingenuous and preachy.
It's why people will complain about AI stealing content, but have no issue with personal torrenting. It's why an artist I spoke to has a moral issue with AI stealing art to make art but also has an issue with people using fiverr to get cheap art - and also why they could not care less about SaaS companies losing their revenue. This isn't limited to AI - when the political candidate you hate does something it's a reason nobody should support them but if your political candidate did the same thing it wouldn't even be on your radar.
People often discover these moral violations after they've already formed their opinion. Tell me the real reason you dislike it. Be honest. That's what I want to hear.
Before anyone misreads this, I'm in the anti-AI camp, so this isn't a rant against people not succumbing to AI. And I know that for some people it really is the moral dilemma.
